More than 50 women across Andhra Pradesh had to be hospitalised on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr after they applied mehndi and developed severe skin rashes.
According to the Vijayawada police, some of the victims even complained of vomiting sensation. The cases were reported from Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati, Kurnool and Anantapur area.
Initial reports indicated that a toxic reaction occurred after black henna was mixed in the mehndi powder to enhance the colour. “We applied mehndi on Sunday around 5 pm. Within an hour, there were rashes all over the body,” said Haseena Begum, a resident of Vijayawada.
Police said that around 20 women from Rayalaseema and 30 from Chittoor district were hospitalised.
